What Do You Need?

Sometimes we find ourselves in the position where what we want is not what we need.  When I was younger what I wanted was more money because the problem was I was in debt. When I was younger I wanted more money to buy a new car because the car I was driving was not terribly reliable.  When I was younger what I wanted was to be a better ball player.

The thing was I didn’t get what I wanted.  I didn’t need more money to get out of debt.  I needed to manage my money better.  I didn’t need a new car.  What I needed to do was take care of the car I had.  What I wanted was to be a better ballplayer.  What I needed was discipline.

In Pastor Connor’s message yesterday from Luke 3:1-11, he talked about giving people the Good News because that’s what people need.  But my question for you today, as members of Christ’s church,  is now that you know the Good News, are you still asking for what you want instead of what you need.

I want my stress reduced.  Jesus says in Matthew 11:

28 “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

I want me life to have meaning rather than redundancy. In Matthew 19:

21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect* go, sell your possessions, and give the money[c] to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” 22 When the young man heard this word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

*Perfect being one who has human integrity and virtue)

I want to stop being afraid and worried.  In Luke 8,  Jesus said let’s get in a boat and go to the other side of the lake:

So they put out, 23 and while they were sailing he fell asleep. A windstorm swept down on the lake, and the boat was filling with water, and they were in danger. 24 They went to him and woke him up, shouting, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he woke up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves; they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?” They were afraid and amazed, and said to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?”

So what do you need today?
